Like Knives

This is something most knife guys get asked about their collection. Many times when you look at someone’s collection you can determine their usage patterns and whether or not they are users or collectors. So what exactly am I?

Let me preface by saying that I have zero qualms about what people do or choose to not do with their knives. I subscribe to the belief that to each their own. This is a hobby, and there are different ways to enjoy it. Taking a hardline stance that ‘collecting’ is silly is something I find peculiar. Many times collectors help drive many of the knives that companies like Spyderco etc. come out with (look at the recently released Navaja).

Personally I see myself as a hybrid of both. I gain satisfaction from collecting different pieces from different manufacturers, makers, and different parts of the world. But let’s be frank. I am not in a financial position where I can always collect really expensive pieces, nor do I get satisfaction just hoarding piece after piece.

I also enjoy using these blades I own in everyday tasks. I’m not an operator, police officer, EMS or bad ass. What I am is a regular bloke who sometimes finds practical use for a small pocketknife. Every blade I purchase must be practical. It must have the ability to be used/carried. Obviously there are some stretches. My Spyderco Military is not a piece that gets carries outside just due to it’s sheer size. But it does have a place in my collection.

Using a blade, regardless of how expensive brings a strange satisfaction. You are using man’s oldest tool, and it’s a polite gesture to the maker/manufacturer. Here is a practical example. My Chris Reeve Small Sebenza is $330 MSRP. I carry that blade the most in my collection and the wear shows. However it was designed as a small pocket tool to be carried, and I feel like I really get my money’s worth when I use it.
